Comedian Dar O'Brien has complained that
a Checkpoint Charlie situation has been
created near London bridges by councils
making contrasting decisions on
licensing electric bikes. The Irish
stand-up comic complained that ebikes
are stacking up at river crossings
between the burs of Houndslow and
Richmond in West London. Houndslow has
given permission for Forest and Voy
ebikes to be used in its area while
Richmond has licensed rival company
Lime. Richmond Council said it has
agreed to a request by Houndslow for its
bike's electric motors to cut out if
riders enter the burough. This causes
the bike to become heavy to ride,
resulting in many users ending their
trips. Lime has urged councils to
collaborate so riders can travel
seamlessly across bur rather than face a
patchwork of boundaries. Houndsow and
Richmond Council have been approached
for comment.
